Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hartland, Michigan has been serving Deaf people in their community for several decades. This past Advent, 5 new members completed their study of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, were confirmed and joined the church. Pictured are Pastor Christopher Thoma of Our Savior, 4 of the 5 new Deaf members and Pastor Thomas Dunseth. Dunseth serves as missionary to the Deaf community for the Michigan District, LCMS, but also supports English District congregations.
Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hartland, Michigan has been serving God’s Deaf people with the Word of God for almost 3 decades. Like many hearing congregations that have a Deaf ministry,
Our Savior’s began when a deaf child was born to one of its families. When the child was young, her mother would interpret for her in church while sitting next to her. Later however, more Deaf people in the community discovered that Our Savior provided access to God’s Word in worship through American Sign Language. It soon became clear that having regular interpreted worship and Deaf Bible study would be necessary.
Currently Our Savior holds weekly Catechism Study and interpreted Lutheran Worship on Wednesday evenings. Pictured are Pastor Thomas Dunseth who is fluent in American Sign Language, and 7 of the 9 members of the Deaf group, among whom are several Lutherans, a few who are studying to become Lutheran, and some new friends.
